Kolkata businessman’s body found in Baruipur canal; 4 arrested, 1 on the run

The body of Sanu Ram (28), a shoe shop owner from Kolkata’s Anandapur area, was recovered from a garden near Agna Kata Canal in Baruipur. Missing since January 31, he was last seen closing his shop in Kasba before disappearing. Locals detected a foul smell on February 5 and informed Baruipur police, leading to the discovery of the decomposed body. His family had filed a missing person report, which was later registered as a kidnapping case.

During the investigation, police tracked a Rs.1 lakh transaction from Sanu’s bank account to Amit Naskar of Sonarpur. Under interrogation, Amit stated that Anup Mondal and Deo Haldar carried out the transfer. Anup was arrested and confessed to the murder, admitting to hiding the body. Officials retrieved financial records, call data, and CCTV footage linking the suspects to the crime.

Four suspects—Anup Mondal, Deep Haldar, Khokon Baidya, and Pradip Nyayban—have been arrested. Another accused, Ranjan Chakraborty, remains missing. Police are searching for him while examining mobile phone locations, bank records, and witness statements. Investigators are working to establish the exact motive behind the murder, as preliminary findings suggest financial involvement.

The body was sent for post-mortem on February 6 to determine the exact cause of death. Police are continuing forensic analysis and questioning additional individuals linked to the suspects. Search operations for the absconding accused are ongoing.
